ODYSSEY OF WHARTON NJ IS BUILDING  80 NEW RESPONSE UNITS FOR FDNY IN NEW YORK CITY
Odyssey of Wharton, NJ is celebrating their 30th year in business, a recent expansion to 33,000 sq. ft. and is proud to be building 80 new response units for the FDNY.  In September the car carriers started rolling in with red GMC pickup trucks.  Half of the trucks will be utilized for Battalion Command and half for EMS response.  Each truck will be outfitted with a high quality fiberglass cap, custom mission specific pull out unit in the rear, lights, sirens and communications equipment for responding to emergency in the country’s largest city, The Big Apple.  The first group was recently delivered to the city for installation of special communications equipment.  Odyssey will be building 5 units per week until all of the trucks are completed.  Odyssey has been interested in this project for almost 25 years.  Teaming up with Beyer Bros GMC of Fairview New Jersey has made the dream possible.  Together they will supply the FDNY with  new response units showing consistency, attention to detail, and service the FDNY expects from their vendors.
FDNY used diesel powered Suburbans for many years, until in 1999 GM discontinued the diesel SUV.  Switching to the Ford Excursion diesel was the only alternative, then Ford discontinued the Excursion in 2005.  FDNY decided the pickup would be a good candidate to be outfitted for the emergency services which would be consistent for many years to come.
The pickup has been America's work horse since Henry Ford's Model T and has continued to be one of the most popular utility vehicles on the road today.  SUV's are primarily designed for the retail market used by families, sportsmen and the RV industry.  An SUV can carry up to eight people and offers fold down seats for luggage or sporting gear.  As an industry pioneer since 1979, Odyssey has converted SUV’s for the emergency services.  Removing the rear seat leaves space for three to five passengers Odyssey manufactures special rear cabinetry, to fit this space which holds mission specific equipment for quick access when responding to an emergency.  There are many regulations for fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars addressing occupant safety and equipment storage but none relating to the SUV conversion for  the emergency services.  Odyssey assures that every conversion meets standards they feel would apply, and ensures every vehicle is manufactured to the highest standard enabling Odyssey to send trucks across the United States and internationally.
Pickup trucks have been used as an inexpensive alternate vehicle to SUV’s which has evolved similar to the SUV.  Today’s pickup is efficient, strong, built to withstand many years and miles of service in the construction and utility markets.  Converting a pick up for use in the emergency services requires the same consistency, and guidelines that Odyssey has provided for many years.  Depending on the specific mission and equipment accessibility, a flat weatherproof cover, raised bed cover, or even a utility insert can be used to protect the equipment in the rear bed from the elements.  Unlike an SUV where the equipment is stored in the same compartment as the passengers, you can store gas cans and other materials that would have created fumes unsafe to the vehicle's occupants.  Odyssey offers slide out units that extend 75%, 100%, or 120% with fixed or adjustable shelves, and command, EMS or tactical cabinet systems on the rear.  These custom slide out units can carry generators, lighting and a myriad of other equipment for quick access and deployment. Include the side lift up windows or doors on the bed cap, and you can access lighter equipment without having to pull out the entire unit which can, when fully loaded weigh up to 2,000 pounds making it difficult to access when not on level ground.
When using an extended or 4 door cab Odyssey can make use of the area behind the seats with special cabinetry for more sensitive equipment.  This is also a good area for tactical equipment when used by law enforcement agencies.
By using a pick up style vehicle without the rear bed, Odyssey offers a custom steel, fiberglass or aluminum utility body enabling access to equipment utilizing exterior compartments not requiring a whole body pull out unit in the rear.  This can also enable the body to be transferred to a new cab and chassis if required.
Many departments around the country are putting these specialty response units into service and always looking at other agencies to see what works best for them.  As always, custom vehicle conversions are a "Work in Progress" that Odyssey has specialized in for over 30 years.  Creativity and experience over time working with many of the emergency services, Odyssey can, does and has provided the best product to meet the agency’s specific missions

Flexibility is the name of the game in crime-scene vehicle design
Economy is sometimes intermixed with efficiency. A response vehicle that is just four wheels, an engine, and storage quickly becomes a place to throw stuff, which later leads to personnel being forced to plow through a pile of odds and ends to find that tool necessary for the case at hand. And yet, large, organized mobile crime-lab vehicles are often either out of the reach of an agency s budaet, or simply not practical.
Enter Odyssey Automotive Specialty: They can customize vehicles to do the job intended-whether a single mobile unit or an entire fleet-with a mix of economy and quality. Their interiors are constructed with a wood-and-composite finish and heavy-duty hardware that is designed to last. Their slide-out truck beds are capable of 1000-1b. loads. They can also offer stock interiors or they work with the customer to design the setup that will best help them do their job.

One of the most impressive aspects of Odyssey is to see the variety of interiors they produce. These are not just one-size-fits-all vans or modular type trucks, but they are also pickup trucks and SUVs, as well as trailers with custom interiors. Whether a mall agency utilizing a single evidence technician, or a major agency with the need to specify a large unit, Odyssey has the capabilities to handle just about any assignment.

Odyssey Automotive sends two special radiation monitoring vans to South Korea

Apantec LLC in Pennsylvania was looking for a company to customize two vans for a contract with the South Korea Government for two W.A.R.N. (Wide Area Radiation Network) laboratories for their nuclear power plants. Testing and monitoring radiation and air conditions are extremely important at these facilities so the challenge was brought to Odyssey to supply two American made vans meeting the customer’s requirements and covered by a factory warranty in South Korea. Odyssey obtained two Chevy 3500 extended length cargo vans, sent them to Quigley of Pennsylvania to be converted to 4 wheel drive and worked closely with the engineers at Apantec and their end user’s from South Korea to manufacture vehicles that would meet everyone’s expectations and mission.

Over six feet of head room was achieved by using a 32” fiberglass top and working closely with Apantec the interior was custom designed to facilitate their air monitoring and radiation detection equipment which would be installed by Apantec after the conversion was completed. Power was supplied by a built in 7,000 watt generator with a shore power connection and a 2,000 watt inverter for back up power. Odyssey’s international experience was called on when some of the equipment can operate on 120 volt American power and other equipment required special South Korean connections to supply 220 volt power for their specialized equipment which would be added on location.

Another very important requirement was the van could not exceed a specific height ruling out the traditional RV style roof mounted air conditioner. Further complicating the conversion was a HEPA filter that must be included on the supply end of the system so contaminated outside air could be filtered before entering the cabin where the technicians would be working. This was accomplished by using a special air conditoner installed over the driver’s compartment under the fiberglass top, adding vents for fresh air intake and stale air exhaust and then passing through a replaceable HEPA filter accessible from the interior to assure clean air.

Still bound by a height requirement one piece of Apantec’s equipment required it to store below roof line and raise four feet above what was needed. This was acomplished by installing a pneumatic mast on the left rear door with controls at the interior work station. The challenge was to keep the equipment below the roof line, enable it to extend above the roof, mounted to an opening rear door and protecting the pneumatic lines and wiring. Odyssey welcomes these types of challenges and encourage all customers to challenge them to work it out. Some have called the Odyssey operation as the “Monster Garage of Emergency Vehicles”

Odyssey is proud to serve, Apantec and South Korea empowering their readiness for emergencies and preventative systems.

WEST COAST POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES ODYSSEY TACTICAL RESPONSE UNIT

Tactical deployment is a tough job that requires special equipment and the ability to carry specially trained personnel to the scene. Odyssey Emergency Vehicles in Wharton, New Jersey has been providing law enforcement agencies a variety of these vehicles since 1979. A major concern is that the vehicle is covert and does not stand out as a target or billboard while traveling to the scene. Stealth and strength were in mind using a Ford cutaway chassis with a standard utility body converted for SWAT and tactical deployment. This particular body offers a large interior area and exterior compartments for tactical equipment, supplies and breaching equipment.
The interior is fully insulated and lined with an acoustical material and there is a rear heat and air conditioning system to keep the rear interior comfortable during any weather condition. For seating there are full depth bench seats covered in a durable Dupont Cordura fabric over high density foam which will accommodate a squad of 12 and store gear under the benches and  above the benches on shelving including a small weapons locker. There is also an area to secure ballistic shields so they are ready when existing the vehicle. For the operation of laptops or communicatons equipment Odyssey installed a 1,000 watt inverter to supply 120 volt power from a heavy duty auxilary battery system. Odyssey installed the latest covert LED emergency lighting behind the grille, front windshield, side upper body windows and behind rear door glass.

This particular department is situated within a few miles of a college campus so Odyssey, once again, more than met the call with this Tactical Deployment Unit.

FEDERAL AGENCY RECEIVES ODYSSEY TACTICAL TRUCK & TRAILER! - SEE MORE

Tactical Deployment is a tough job that requires State-of-the-Art equipment.  Odyssey built such a vehicle combo for a federal agency for deployment, SWAT and mission support.  Due to operations in higher elevations the agency chose a 2008 Dodge 5500 with a Cummins Diesel and  a 4X4 chassis with a custom utility body resembling a commercial vehicle for covert operations.  Stealth and strength were in mind when this heavy duty utility truck and trailer were equipped.  The rear body of the truck is insulated and has separate air conditioning and heat and can seat 12 fully suited tactical personnel with gear ready to go. Odyssey built bench seating with lift up seats for storage and added drop down locking doors on the side wall shelves of the body for  weapons and sensitive equipment storage.  They won’t see them coming but when they arrive their presence will be more than noticed. Odyssey installed the latest LED emergency lighting from Whelen including behind the glass covert LED emergency lights, grill lights, front strobes, rear strobes and a siren with light controller.
The trailer is equipped with a generator on the front tongue which can be remotely started from the interior panel that controls command and lighting functions as well.  An inverter provides  AC power for electronic equipment, communications and computers. The rear of the trailer was specially designed with heavy duty aluminum fold down shelves with dropdown quick release cargo nets to keep all equipment all in place during transport.  The shelves are split into front and rear sections separated by aircraft tie down track.  When transporting large equipment the vertical suports can be removed and stored and a section or all of the shelves can be latched against the wall and tall equipennt can be secured and strapped to the walls.  During a long deployment the shelves can be secured and the center of the trailer used for meetings or as a rehab area.

Odyssey, once again, more than met the call with this very original Tactical Unit.

ODYSSEY GOES TO CAYMAN ISLANDS DELIVERS RESCUE UNIT TO LITTLE CAYMAN - SEE MORE

Tucked away under Cuba and 90 miles NW of Grand Cayman is a small island called Little Cayman.  A small island of only 150 permanent residents Little Cayman is a haven for dive enthusiasts boasting some of the best diving in the world.  Far away from large island Emergency Medical Services the clinic has a 35-year-old ambulance and an older Jeep, which are both out of commission.  The parent Hospital on Cayman Brac, 6 miles to the North purchased an Odyssey EMS response unit built on a new Ford Expedition.   Now when a medical emergency arises the nurse can respond in a unit that will carry personnel and medical response equipment.  If transport is necessary she can secure the patient on the onboard folding backboard, fold a rear seat, secure the patient and transport the Little Cayman Clinic or to the grassy runway to be flown to Cayman Brac or Grand Cayman for treatment.   The last time they had an emergency requiring transport they had to use a neighbors pick up truck.

The Expedition is outfitted with a custom Odyssey Transport cabinet fabricated with laminate and easy to clean materials, has emergency lighting, high power electrical including an inverter for equipment and even a roof mounted solar charger to make sure the vehicle and equipment is always charged.  Odyssey has shipped many similar vehicles to other Caribbean islands as well as remote areas in the US.  “Being an avid diver it is a good feeling to know that we can make a difference to beautiful remote resorts,” stated Larry Kahan, Odyssey’s president.

A TRUE STORY AND TESTIMONY OF THE SafeBOX™
SafeBOX with Meds

Clark County Nevada EMS was having a problem with a local thief breaking into and stealing narcotics from in service ambulances. When the thief tried to break into a Medicwest Ambulance he had met his match. Medicwest uses the SafeBOX to keep their narcotics safe when on board their ambulances. The thief tried for over half an hour with a crow bar and hammer to break into the SafeBOX and the noise alerted the crew who called the police and the thief was arrested and taken into custody where he faces serious charges

The ambulance cabinet and shelf that the SafeBOX was bolted to received extensive damage but the SafeBOX stayed secure into the mounting sleeve and was not breached. Seeing how well the SafeBOX protected their narcotics their director mandated that all of their ambulances carrying narcotics use the SafeBOX product.

ATLANTIC COUNTY, NJ OEM TAKES DELIVERY OF AN ODYSSEY COMMAND EXCURSION
Atlantic County Office of Emergency Management in New Jersey chose Odyssey Automotive Specialty to build their Command and Communications unit based on the department’s existing Ford Excursion. Odyssey worked closely with Michael Bradeis to come up with a design which would work for their application. Utilizing their experience building surveillance vehicles Odyssey dark tinted all of the windows, fabricated a black out curtain behind the driver and passenger seat and designed a special cabinet system for the gear and equipment.
Removing the large rear seat and reversing the small rear seat Odyssey modified their Inside Command Cabinet system resulting in an interior command and control position facing the rear of the vehicle. A pull out desk, file and parts drawers and an area for the video equipment was in easy reach of the operator. Powered from an onboard inverter system were two 15” flat panel monitors, thermal and PC printers, digital video recorders and multiple cameras to view and record the scene from different angles of the vehicle. A dome style pan, tilt and zoom color camera mounted to a magnetic mount can be placed on the roof and plugged into weatherproof connections when additional video is required. The rear of the cabinet included a pull out command board, additional 7” flat panel monitor and storage for a 10’ x 10’ pop up shelter and additional equipment.
Emergency lighting was covert by using a Whelen Inner Edge light bar behind the windshield, linear LED lights behind the grille and strobes on all four corners. For special exterior communications and video connections a panel was located behind a weatherproof cover on the rear corner.

Odyssey builds unit for Paramus PD

Law enforcement agencies need specialized vehicles to protect the public and Paramus New Jersey Police Department chose Odyssey Automotive Specialty to build their Patrol Commander Unit. This 2006 Ford Expedition lights up any situation with a Will-Burt NightScan Chief Light Tower and pistol grip controller. A Setina grill guard was installed for moving obstructions or stalled vehicles and all the latest power saving LED emergency lighting and sound was packaged as well. Weapons, tactical and lifesaving equipment go hand in hand in law enforcement and special organized storage is required. Odyssey met this challenge with their full length law enforcement cabinet. Deep slotted drawers mounted on slide-out rails secure longer tools and weapons while inside SCBA brackets hold fire fighting equipment. For rapid deployment Odyssey added an open storage compartment with quick release cargo straps to hold equipment tight during transport. Extra capacity is enhanced with a side door cabinet which allows access from inside the vehicle. This cabinet is an added bonus for EMS, Fire and Law Enforcement situations.

ODYSSEY BUILDS MICU FOR TRINITAS HOSPITAL IN ELIZABETH, NJ
A customer since the late 1980’s Trinitas has always run Odyssey’s Paramedic Response Units. One of the unique features are temperature controlled compartments to protect valuable medications and fluids vital to life support on the scene. Odyssey developed a system that operates when the vehicle is running, parked or on stand by at the hospital for over 10 years now and the system is widely used by many departments and ambulance manufacturers across the country. On a 2006 Ford Expedition Odyssey installed a custom ALS style temperature controlled cabinet. System-70 is what keeps needed drugs from spoiling from extreme cold or heat conditions while inside the ALS compartment. The 20% rear seat was removed to make way for the side door cabinet feature allowing a medic inside access to needed supplys.
An extra length tool drawer with plexi dividers, slide out setup trays, backboard storage and ample supply cabinet makes this unit a mini ER. To keep it all running indefinitely Odyssey installed a shore line to plug into any available 120 Volt 20 amp circuit. Odyssey’s Console is the control center for this vehicle, fully equipped with an 8 switch panel backed up by lifetime guaranteed breakers, map light, harness system, cooling fan, and dual 12 volt outlets. All the latest power saving LED emergency lighting were installed on this EMS unit for ultimate visibility. To make sure this MICU Responder is heard as well as seen Odyssey installed dual air horns and two siren speakers powered by a 200 watt siren. Flashy and bold reflective graphics from Odyssey Graphics tops it off with the Trinitas logo proudly displayed on the rear windows. For the question of reliability in saving lives and emergency situations Odyssey is the answer in advanced life support and paramedic response vehicles.

The automotive industry’s constant state of flux provides a constant challenge for any involved engineering departments. The 2007 Tahoe, Suburban and Impala’s new dashboard juts out a bit more for our prior console’s architecture. Odyssey’s Cabinet Systems designer has met that challenge with a
new line of standard consoles. Change in the design and construction for Odyssey is not as costly or time consuming as mass production re-tooling. Building custom cabinets and consoles in house allows more flexibility in this area.

FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES NEW
ODYSSEY EXPEDITION RESCUE UNIT

Emergency transport of patients or accident victims is essential for any volunteer or professional department. However, situations arise in locations that prohibit the larger ambulances and utility vehicles in most squads from traveling to. Pine Bush Volunteer Fire Department decided to add a 2006 Ford Expedition to their squad and Odyssey Automotive Specialty, a leader in rescue, commander, utility and responder vehicles, was put to a test and passed with flying colors. A portion of the cabinet will drop after the rear seat is folded allowing a person to be secured on a full size back board. When in the up position extra equipment can be stored in the rear and protect the driver and passenger from flying equipment in case of an accident. The platform also included a steel screen as not to limit visibility out the rear of the vehicle.
A grill guard with wrap around protectors keeps the headlights protected and a police car style post spotlight was mounted on the drivers side as well to light up night time responses. This new response unit can access areas where larger rigs can not and includes all LED emergency lighting by Whelen controlled from Odyssey’s custom control console with lifetime switch panel. Any size vehicle from a small off road ATV to a large trailer or command bus receives the Odyssey quality stamp in workmanship and originality.

ODYSSEY TACTICAL UNIT GOES TO CLASSIFIED LOCATION!

Tactical Deployment is a tough job that requires the same when it comes to equipment. Odyssey built a vehicle for assignment in a sensitive area of the world. Stealth and strength were in mind when this van was equipped with a heavy duty NYPD style front crash bumper and an 8,000 lb cap. winch, slide out deployment runners, 3/16”gauge aluminum diamond plate roof platform and rails to hang ballistic blankets, rear grip strut step, all in jet black. If towing a command trailer or extra fire power is needed a class 3 hitch is part of the package. They won’t see them coming but when they arrive their presence will be more than noticed. Odyssey installed the latest emergency lighting and equipment on the market including: a Whelen slimlighter behind the glass, LED grill lights, front strobes, rear strobes and a Whelen siren. Powering it all is a 220 Volt 60Hz European electrical system with a 1,000 watt sine wave inverter to protect high tech equipment.

Dual alternators supply the charge needed to keep it all going when the action gets tight. To maneuver on rough terrain and speed a detail to their objective Odyssey chose a Ford Diesel Quigley 4x4. Stealth was in mind for the interior with black light-tight black out pads and curtains, 5% privacy tinted windows, and a slimlighter instead of a roof mounted light bar.

When the detail jumps off the running boards and pours out of the back of the van they’ll be armed and carrying tactical equipment as well. So the job gets done right Odyssey supplied the following: PB30-RatBar, BC30 RatCutter, HM30 Rat Sledge, BR35 Rat Ram, PB30-2, PB20 Mini RatBar and a Tactical Ladder. Odyssey, once again, more than met the call with this Tactical Unit.

ODYSSEY DELIVERS TWO EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TRAILERS TO PASSAIC COUNTY

Two 28’ trailers were recently delivered to Passaic County Emergency Management in New Jersey. One unit was built as an equipment and support unit to carry the equipment needed for mass casualty, HazMat and other emergencies. Included is a generator, interior lighting and 1000 watt exterior scene lights to assure there would be enough lighting during an emergency. Built with permanent, portable and folding shelves the equipment trailer can adapt to the rapidly changing equipment carried by emergency departments nationwide. If shelving is removed all of the walls have two levels of equipment track to hold larger equipment. To maintain a comfortable climate the unit has two powered roof vents, large roof mounted air conditioners and electric wall heaters for the colder weather.

The second trailer is a Command and Rehab unit. The forward portion of the trailer is well lit and includes a wrap around command desk with overhead radio and equipment storage. For scene management there are two roof mounted remote control color camera systems wired to a DVR and flat screen TV monitor to let the operators get a good 360 degree view of the scene.
The rear portion of the trailer is designed as a Rehab and support area. Separated from the command area by a partition wall with a locking sliding pocket door the rehab area can be isolated. Included in this area is a refrigerator, under counter coffee maker, storage, a microwave and sink mounted in a corian counter top. . The benches include storage and are upholstered with Dupont Cordura for long life and durability.

Both trailers have scene lighting, exterior awnings and emergency lighting and carry enough power from their compartment mounted generators. On the tongue of the trailer is a special compartment designed by Odyssey to house the onboard fuel as well as 6 gallon portable fuel containers to refill during long events.

Odyssey’s custom designed trailers have been a standard for mobile classrooms, offices, surveillance and more since 1979 and proudly adds Passaic County to the list.

The last units Odyssey built for LRC
are still operational almost 15 years later

ODYSSEY DELIVERS SPECIAL OPS TRAILER TO CENTER TWP, PA POLICE DEPT.
A 22’ trailer was delivered to Center TWP in Pennsylvania for Crime Scene Investigation and Tactical Operations. This time Odyssey has created a fully operational office and command center engineering it for transport to just about any location. The forward room is outfitted as a fully operational command with seated counters, overhead and under counter cabinets with tool and file drawers. The rear room is the rehab area with refrigerator, sink, ample seating, non slip coin style floor (through out), heat and AC all for the outdoor squad during their breaks. Security cameras mounted on the front and rear exterior provide a wide view and operated via joy stick if intruders need to be focused on. Odyssey installed several panels with communications ports and electrical outlets near each work station should more electronics be needed. The exterior of both units are bedecked with an array of emergency and scene lighting. A command light with flashing strobe on extendable pole designates the command trailer. Keeping the command trailer supplied with electricity is an Onan 10,000 Watt Quiet Diesel generator.

From first impression the equipment trailer looks as though it could outfit a small army. Odyssey made sure Passaic County’s emergency and tactical equipment arrives on the scene and ready for action. This depot on wheels holds all the heavy and light duty tools on chrome wire shelves and tie down racks all secured with quick release cargo straps. For rapid deployment a rear door is let down and acts as a ramp as well. The electrical power is provided by a NorthStar 10,000 Watt portable gas generator. Both of these units have rock solid support with dual axles and superior stopping power with electric brakes. With a GVWR of 10,000 lbs the Command and Rehab trailer will feel like it’s built on a foundation. The equipment trailer’s 14,000 lb capacity suspension system is sure to be up to the job of any emergency. Odyssey’s custom designed trailers have been a standard for mobile classrooms, offices, surveillance and more since 1979 and proudly adds Passaic County to the list.

MOBILE ENVIRONMENTAL LAB - VAN CONVERSION BY ODYSSEY

Testing and and monitoring air quality during emergences and disasters is important for all and all is what was given when Odyssey converted a 2004 GMC Savana Van into a walk in mobile testing lab. For plenty of head room Odyssey extended the ceiling height with a fiberglass Transit Tall Top. Making sure that the technicians are well equipped our shop crafted an efficient laboratory workspace. So that there is plenty of elbow room to organize and utilize their pumps, sensors, air monitors, weather stations and more Odyssey planned out work benches, adjustable shelves, cabinets with drawers, storage compartments and a pull out work space. Maintaining quiet during lab time is essential so Odyssey provided soundproofing to the pump compartment to keep down unwanted distracting noise inside and outside.

LonPlate rubber floors makes for safe working conditions with a non slip surface and an ease for sanitary maintenance as well. All of the electrical systems, lighting, and emergency lighting are powered by a 7,000 watt gas generator and 2000 watt inverter making this vehicle an independent unit when desirable. If outsourced AC current is available a shore line can be connected to facilitate longer time periods for sampling collection, lab work or documentation. This van needs to have a low profile on the scene and was fitted with all of the latest LED behind the glass covert emergency lighting available. To control all of the electrical equipment efficiently Odyssey installed a Paneltronics breaker panel.

Odyssey is proud to serve, once again, the Department of Health empowering their ready ness for emergencies and standard testing procedures.
